The first Wednesday of August is here! That means New Comic Book Day! This is one you won’t want to miss. Just look at that shockingly beautiful cover by Chris Batista and John-Paul Bové. I mean, it has Cobra Commander, it has Optimus Prime and it has, wait, is that…? Why yes it is. Our old friend, G2 Megatron! “But, Yoshi… Greig,” I hear you asking. “How is G2 Megatron in a G1 Transformers story? A story that is supposed to be filling the gap left between the end of the cartoon’s second season and the 1986 animated movie? G2 Megatron and his green and purple tank mode weren’t even in the ’86 movie. It was the G1 Megatron that transformed into a Walther P38 handgun that was in the movie. What is going on?”
Clearly, if you are asking any of these questions you haven’t been reading the last two issues of Transformers: REANIMATED guest starring G.I. Joe. So go download them and catch up. They are free after all.
Issue 49, The Revenge of Cobra! continues the Transformers crossover you always wanted to see as a kid with everyone’s favorite, highly trained special mission force, G.I. Joe! I hope you’re ready for the third issue in our four-issue limited series.
Battle-damaged and in need of immediate repairs, Megatron seeks help from Cobra’s infamous madman, Destro and the equally-as-nefarious, Doctor Mindbender within the Cobra Terror Drome. Their goal? TRANSFER the Decepticon’s mind into a new-and-improved body! Meanwhile, back in the Ark, G.I. Joe and the Autobots come up with a plan to overtake Cobra and the Decepticons; a plan that will allow them to regain full control of the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline. But will G.I. Joe and the Autobots be ready for Megaton’s new surprise? Or will Cobra and the Decepticons maintain their snake-like grip on this great northern oil resource?
To find out, you’ll have to download this month’s free issue.
The adventure continues with issue 49 as two celebrated childhood properties from the 80s do battle within these pages. Chris Batista and John-Paul Bové continue their mind-blowing work with this issue’s cover; two fantastic artists who have an established history of working on both Transformers and G.I. Joe.
Chris Batista worked on the original G.I. Joe comics that reintroduced the Transformers in the early 90s as Transformers: Generation 2. And of course, John-Paul Bové who has not only worked on G.I. Joe titles from IDW, but also worked on several G1 titles such as Transformers: ReGeneration One and Transformers: ’84.
The cover for today’s issue of Transformers: ReAnimated was inspired by issue #4 of Sgt Rock: The Lost Battalion, originally by the extremely talented Billy Tucci.
For this cover, Greig and I wanted a way to show off G2 Megatron’s might against Optimus Prime with a cover that screamed to the reader, “WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?”. We think we pulled that off with this homage to Billy Tucci’s Sgt Rock Cover.
Written by Youseph (Yoshi) Tanha from the YoshiCast and Greig Tansley from the Unfunny Nerd Tangent podcast, this G1 adventure follows in the Transformers: ReAnimated tradition of bridging the gap between the cartoon’s second season and the 1986 Movie that defined the childhood of millions, worldwide.
So, if you *did* like issue 49: The Revenge of Cobar, then please consider contacting SKYBOUND Entertainment (Via E-mail or Twitter) and let them know you would have liked to see Transformers: REANIMATED as an ongoing comic book series written by Yoshi and Greig.
